We spend funds to help vets.
The mission of the VMLC is to improve the quality of the health and welfare of veterans in Maricopa County. We do this by raising funds and providing financial support for items that are not included in the Federal budget. Support is administered through programs like these:
Returning Warriors Fund.
Provides a financial safety net for our newest veterans fighting the Global War on Terror. This fund makes payments for items such as mortgages, rent, auto loans, auto repairs, utilities, groceries, and gas. The fund helps to overcome homelessness, keep families together and prevent veterans from the having to apply for public assistance while battling to reclaim their places in society.
Homeless Veterans
We have provided support for a daily community outreach lunch program for homeless veterans. We have also supported homeless shelters in Phoenix with financial support for basic dental care.
The VMLC provides financial support for Stand Downs for homeless veterans. In 2009, over 500 homeless veterans were seen at the Stand Down. Some of the services provided at the Stand Down include emergency housing needs, social security claims, medical, dental, eyeglasses, meals, clothing and job and career counseling.
Social Work Services
We have assisted the VA’s program which provides gasoline gift cards, telephone cards, temporary subsistence needs, bus passes and miscellaneous assistance needs for patients.
Blinded Veterans
We have supported VA programs and training for veterans who have been blinded in battle. Most recent patients are those who have been wounded in Desert Storm and the War On Terror around the globe.
Mental Health Services
We have provided supplies and equipment for patients dealing with post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
Arizona State Veterans Home
Examples of funding for the state home include needed equipment for inpatient food service, a wheelchair-accessible library for the residents, and a garden patio for patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Veterans Day Parade
We're also the primary fundraiser for the annual Veterans Day parade in Phoenix.
